An era ends with Bajia’s passing

A golden era of literature comes to an end as the famous Urdu novelist and dramatist Fatima Surayya Bajia passes away after a long period of illness on Wednesday evening here in Karachi. She was 86 years old and was well known for various social and welfare activities. She worked tirelessly particularly for the betterment of education sector.

It will come as a surprise to many that Fatima Surayya Bajia never went to school herself but she became such an institution for those related to literature and drama. She was followed and admired by millions of followers not only locally but internationally as well.

Fatima Surayya Bajia was born in Karnataka, a famous city in India, Bajia’s family then migrated to Pakistan soon after partition. She was groomed in the arts under the guidance of her father. Even with the severe financial constraints, the family had to face after migration, Bajia’s family continued practicing fine arts and drama. She and her siblings were invested with love for arts and grew to become very creative artists. Bajia wrote her first novel when she was only a teenager.

She was married once but after an early divorce, she never married again. She chose to look after he nine siblings including few big names like Anwar Maqsood, Zehra Nigah and Zubaida Tariq. As they were brought up under the influence of Bajia, all of them went to become the great contributors in the field of arts and drama in Pakistan.

Bajia’s Namaz-e-Janaza is scheduled to be offered after Zuhr prayer at 36-D Miran Mohammad Shah Road, Muhammad Ali Society. She will be buried at the Gizri Graveyard.
