#Stop Jahez Khori! A Positive Step to Stand against Dowry!

Wedding season in Pakistan is in full swing these days and a month full of wedding festivities is celebrated in our society. Wedding events including mehndi, mayon, baraat, reception and some extra events like bridal shower, family gatherings or dholkis and many other traditional gatherings occur. Giving dowry to the girl on her marriage is one of the oldest customs of our society. Even in this modern time when technology and lifestyles of the people have changed and modernized, these norms are still in practice, as people seem to follow their forefathers. Lavish wedding ceremonies, extraordinary list of materials in dowry has made marriages a bit difficult. Most of the population of Pakistan is middle-class who just earn for a living. They hardly manage to save enough amount to serve a good menu to the guests on their children’s marriages.

This pathetic practice has even caused severe problems for women. Women are brutally tortured, teased and they are even killed for not bringing a motorbike for her husband or girl’s parents could not afford to fulfill the demands of the in-laws! At over 2000 dowry-related deaths per year, Pakistan has the highest reported number of dowry deaths per 100,000 women in the world, according to a Facebook page “That brown hijabi”.

Most pathetic thing is that Pakistan had passed Dowry and marriage gifts (restriction) bill in 2008. According to that bill, the estimated dowry expense must be not more than PKR 30,000 while the total value of bridal gifts should not exceed to PKR 50,000. Laws’ demands of dowry and public display of dowry are considered illegal. Despite this bill, demanding material possessions by girl’s family is common today.

Celebrities and public figures of Pakistan have finally thought on this issue and have raised a campaign under the name “#Jahez Khori Band Karo” highlighting this stereotype and hoping to put an end to it! The aim of this campaign is to change people’s perspectives to think about better. Popular celebrities actively participated in this campaign by writing on their hands through henna “Jahez Khori Band Karo” Artists like Adnan Siddique, Ayesha Umer, Ushna Shah, Sana Javed, Iqra Aziz, and Jugun Kazim actively showed their concern regarding this campaign, sharing their thoughts on social media applications.

This drive has hit social media like a fire in a forest and has been continuously receiving feedbacks. A lot of social media users have admired this trend, while some people have given some sarcastic views too, they think artists are doing this just to gain publicity or just to remain “highlighted” in daily gossips. They have even taunted that celebrities spend a lot in their extravagant wedding ceremonies and they do not know the true meaning of simplicity.

We hope that such initiatives can put an end to stereotypes and can bring a change in our society, this practice must be abolished. We have to start from a scratch! We must stop making commercial especially old one concept of Molty foam ads and conservative stories of drama serials. There is a need to bring and promote new concepts that can create a positive impact on viewers’ mind!
