Does Standing Up Help You in Staying Fit?

Have you imagined that just sitting down can do irremediable harm to your health? Believe it or not, being deskbound in the modern health is the same as smoking. This fact was revealed in the latest medical journal ‘The Lancet’ and it found that if you sit down 11 hours or further in a day, you have a 40% bigger risk of death in the next 3 years counter to people who sit 4 hours or less!

But if we talk about ourselves, we sit these days more than ever. According to the study, 70% of us are off our feet, either seated or lying back, for a shocking 20 hours a day. During travel, working in the office, having meals, and watching TV or movies we are continuously sitting down. Still, we kid ourselves that we are living active and busy life.

And the terrifying part is, research says as exercise does not essentially offset the effects of smoking, it doesn’t offset the damaging effects of excessively sitting.

So just how more do you need to spend standing up to stay healthy and fit?

Doctors say that swapping two hours of sitting a day with standing possibly will recover your blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and that walking rather than sitting may have further benefits for people’s waists. Similarly, if you switch 2 hours of sitting with walking or standing in a day you can lower 11% BMI and a 3-inch reduced waistline.

There are just little things you can include in your life to stay away from harmful effects of sitting all the day.

Accessibility is the nemesis of calories. And every second count. The study proposes that spending an extra 2 hours a day standing in place of sitting is associated with a 2% lower fasting blood sugar level, and an 11% lower level of triglycerides, or fats in the blood.

Furthermore, Doctors say that by just standing and walking for five minutes in every one hour of an eight-hour working day - an average adult could burn over 2,500 calories or third part of a kilo in one month.

So water the garden using a watering can rather than a garden hose. Don’t go lazy if there are just a few used plates after dinner, stand and wash them instead of waiting for a maid. It will feel odd but watch TV while you are stand up, offer your seat to others in the bus, and instead of slumping down on a sofa at an event, stay standing and try meeting others.

Get a standing desk? These desks actually look cool and can be adjusted according to your height and when you get tired, take a seat. 10 minutes in an hour of stand-up is all you need.

Drink more water. Not only is it good for your complete fitness but you will be getting up more from your seat to go to the toilet.

Talk to co-workers instead of staring screen constantly. Move. Be more social and interact when you can avoid emails.

Stand up for phone calls or walk when you talk.

Simply just stand up the more you can to avoid the potential health and obesity risk!
