#MeToo Movement: Meesha Shafi Accuses Ali Zafar for Sexual Harassment, Ali Denies & Seeks to Take Legal Way

A huge wave of speaking up against sexual misconduct and harassment, #MeToo has hit Pakistan. #MeToo Movement — the ground-breaking campaign relating to sexual harassment and wrongdoing, that has many famous international celebrities amid its folds — model, actor and singer Meesha Shafi has blamed renowned singer, actor, colleague and fellow student Ali Zafar of sexual harassment.

Putting herself in the worldwide #MeToo movement, Meesha Shafi turned to twitter to accuse his colleague Ali Zafar claiming that she was sexually harassed by Ali on more than one occasion.

“I have been subjected to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences did not happen when I was young or just entering the industry. This happened to be despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children,” Meesha wrote.

Ali Zafar, on the other hand, denied all accusations and shared that he will follow the proper course of law to deal with the issue and doesn’t want to "contest personal vendetta on social media".

After Meesha Shafi, more women have come forward and spoken about their particular harassment experiences with Ali Zafar. Meesha and Ali’s co-stars have also raised their voices on the controversy including Osman Khalid Butt and Mahira Khan who boldly supported the victims of sexual harassment. On the other hand, many bigwigs are still silent on the controversy since it involves two of very big celebrities.

The #MeToo Movement was promoted by American actress and activist Alyssa Milano who used the hashtag to buoy up women around the world to tweet their experiences of sexual harassment. The movement was fuelled by the sexual assault allegations made by several actresses against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Reportedly, it is for the first time a Pakistani celebrity has levelled allegations of sexual harassment against a colleague and it has come amid on-going 'Me Too' hashtag movement, which has spreading everywhere after many celebrities in the West spoke up against sexual harassment and called out their harassers in October and a few months thereafter.
