Top-notch crowd of 'City of Lights' wins PSL final

It was a night of phenomena when metropolis embraced million smiles and cheers. It was a night of cricket homecoming when fireworks erupted from the iconic National Stadium Karachi after 9 years break. It was a night when packed stadium felt less like a simple light show and more like a giant signal to the entire world of changing times. So, cricket is back with its magnanimous glory in this wonderful resilient against all odds.

After so many intense and thrilling games, the season had to finish with a game of this calibre. Defending champion Peshawar Zalmi and inaugural winners Islamabad United came in action but hurricane Ronchi blew away yellow storm and world witnessed some phenomenal scenes from Karachi stadium. The fight, effort, passion, tears and smiles, all was there. Skipper Duminy and his mates were all in celebrations in Karachi whilst Darren Sammy seemed gutted to have missed the boat after coming so close.

In hunt of 149, United were off to astral start as Luke Ronchi and Sahibzada Farhan speed up 96 runs for first wicket in just 8.5 overs. Ronchi got his fifth fifty on just 25 balls at an outstanding strike rate of 200. His innings spiced with four 4s and five 6s.  Soon after, Walton got on duck by Umaid Asif as Zalmi fancied a comeback. Jordan dismissed skipper Duminy on 2 runs to lift the hopes. United innings was shaking but Kamran Akmal dropped a crucial catch of Asif Ali that cost them trophy. Asif’s new life helped Islamabad reclaimed the title for record second time.

It was Karachi who pulled off in the final of Pakistan Super League 3 on Sunday night when ‘city of lights’ actually revived the old lost passion of how a cricket crazy nation should look like. In its third year, the PSL has become a remarkable success in the cricket-obsessed nation of 208 million as even with temperatures soaring to 38 degrees Celsius; crazy fans lined up for hours to get into the stadium early to achieve a glimpse of the local and foreign players whose popularity has flew in the run up to the final.

Karachi became the second major venue to host international matches after Lahore hosted five international matches against Zimbabwe in 2015, as well as the PSL final in March last year, three World XI matches in September and one against Sri Lanka a month later. Sunday’s final was watched by a packed 33,000 crowd, including Pakistan’s prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abassi.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and the forerunner of PSL Najam Sethi expressed gratitude to Karachiites and said, “This is a very big historic occasion. You have filled this stadium and shown the world that we are ready for the return of the international cricket.

Owner of Islamabad United Ali Naqvi saluted to the resilience of Karachiites and said that the people of Karachi were lively, responsive, loud, cheerful & full of patriotic fervour.

Ali tweeted, “We are dedicating Islamabad United’s PSL3 final win to the beautiful & resilient people & city of Karachi.”

This is indeed a great job done by the organizers of the event and PCB, Najam Sethi, CM Sindh for beautifying the city, all stake holders and top-notch Karachi crowd for turning this PSL final into a great festival. Thanks to the cricketers who visited Pakistan and showed to the rest of the world that peace prevails in Pakistan Salute to all the security forces for standing on streets in scorching heat to ensure safety of everyone.
