Afridi's Fifer Helps Winning Lahore After Eight Consecutive Defeats

Pakistan had always relied on Shahid Afridi to do some magic when everything in the match sliding slowly from them. Either batting or bowling, Afridi really has something that made him Boom Boom even after 20 years. By the same token, Lahore Qalandars needed someone to break their losing curse and it took another Afridi to do that. So, Qalandars has finally awakened from their dark epoch, thanks to 17-year-old southpaw Shaheen Shah Afridi’s extraordinary five-wicket haul that rally round Qalandars finally finds a way to victory after eight straight defeats since February 20th, 2017.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, the 6 ft. 6-inch left-arm pacer, who bowled his heart out to finish with figures of 3.4-1-4-5 and give Lahore their first taste of victory to salvage some of its pride after consecutive phases of embarrassment. Afridi, who went wicketless in the previous three matches, pulled through the match against Multan Sultans who were sitting on the top of the table with their brilliant win records since the beginning of the tourney.

That downslide was finally squeezed and the win has now given team and fans a gleam of happiness after so long. These are the third-best bowling figures in PSL history behind Ravi Bopara's 6 for 16 in 2016 and Umar Gul's 6 for 24 earlier this month.

Earlier batting first, Multan Sultans made an admirable start as their openers Ahmed Shehzad and Kumar Sangakkara smashed 61 from just eight overs. Then, Sanga was dismissed by Sunil Narine for 45, made off 30 balls with eight fours and a six. Then Shaheen Shah Afridi’s came and worn-out the middle and lower orders, Multan was able to score only 17 runs in their last five overs for the loss of seven wickets. Only three batsmen ended with double-digit tallies.

In response, Lahore had a brisk start with Anton Devcich and Fakhar Zaman on the crease. After blasted 22 off 9, Devcich fell to Shoaib Malik and soon lapsed into a more cautious slant after they lost three wickets including Fakhar and Agha Salman in successive overs. Then skipper McCullum along with Gulraiz Sadaf made a 64-run partnership stand that let Lahore chased down the target in 18.4 overs, with Afridi being named Man of the Match.

Shaheen has had a sensational first-class debut and picked up eight wickets while giving away just 39 runs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. His returns are still the best figures by a Pakistani on one’s first-class debut. He idolizes the legendary Wasim Akram.

Lahore Qalandars producing talented players and giving youngsters proper chances since the first season of PSL. After the successful introduction of Fakhar Zaman, that helped to win us Champions Trophy. This year it will be Shaheen Shah Afridi. What an amazing talent he is.
