China to Establish its Own Naval Base in Gawadar

Pakistan and China are coming closer more and more.  Since declaring in 2014 plans for the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)—a trade route linking China to the Indian ocean—the countries have become strong allies in trade, defence, and regional cooperation, leading some bystanders to surprise whether China is moving in to fill the role of US in Pakistan, providing the country with aid and development projects in response for strategic military centres.

Now, a recent report from Pentagon states that China is willing to establish its own naval base in Gwadar, Pakistan to strengthen the more secure mutual and defense ties. Wajahat S. Khan, a senior journalist told the NBC News that the news came from higher intelligence and Military source but Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied the Pentagon’s report and termed it as ““irresponsible remarks on China's national defence development and reasonable actions in defending our territorial sovereignty and security interests in disregard of the facts.”

Wajahat confirmed that Pakistan’s Military officials invited China to create a naval base in Pakistan against India in 2011 after the US attacked Abbottabad to kill Osama Bin Laden. One of the officials told Wajahat that “Pakistan needed an equalizer against India, Previously, it was the US and Saudi Arabia but Now, it's China,” to combat India’s Military rivalry in the region.

According to Media reports, Chinese Navy task group visited Pakistan last week where the two countries accompanied joint operational training actions. Pakistan’s chief of naval staff released a report saying that the stay is “expected to enhance interoperability and maritime collaboration between the two navies.”
