Resurgent Pakistan attacks the composed England to Reach Champions Trophy Final

Who else have thought that a team losing desperately from India will make its remarkable way to Final? A team that hardly managed to make the grade for the tournament is now the first team to qualify for the final. Pakistan may face India or Bangladesh at the Oval on Sunday.

England were the overpowering favorites to reach the final on home dust but was whipped by a resurgent Pakistan team, who fired the hosts for just 211 to win by 8 wickets to stamp their first-ever final in the tournament's history and first since 1999’s World Cup. This was the first time the two teams had seen in a playoff match at a crucial tournament since Pakistan’s outstanding victory in the 1992 World Cup final.

Pakistan, evidently, started this tourney with a doleful show against India at Edgbaston. But they are climaxing at the right time has now sent off South Africa, Sri Lanka, and England in successive games. It was a major frustration for England, who topped the group winning all three group matches in their attempt to claim a first international 50-over title and had previously beaten Pakistan in 12 of their last 14 one-day internationals.

Pakistan not only just got the better of England, but also the way they did it, was quite clinical. The margin of success – by eight wickets with almost 13 overs to spare – is as composed as you can get, and is revealing the class of cricket the two sides showed on the day.

It was the kind of time Sarfraz would love to have again and again. It was as if he couldn’t place a foot in the wrong. Every move of his reimbursed, his bowlers were dead right when they could so easily have gotten carried away, and Pakistan fielded like they haven't for a long time, putting pressure on England with preparedness and enthusiasm and even notching a direct hit to pick up a wicket.

England batting was throttled by Pakistan’s young bowling. Pakistan raised in a left-arm quickie called Rumman Raees for his international unveiling and he was excellent. All six Pakistan bowlers were comprehensively amazing, reversing and swinging the ball, but it was Hasan Ali, an unheralded bowler, bouncy speedster Hasan Ali, who stole the show with 3-35, ripping through England’s batsman.

For Pakistan, it was a huge victory. Ranked 8th in the world in One Day Cricket, they were maligned after being smashed by India in their maiden match. They have made their historic way to final. What a turnaround.
