What keeps you hooked up at Facebook?

Facebook is a lot more than what we see. It has been alleged of using casino-style tricks that will make their users logged on. According to the recent report by ‘The Independent’, Former Google employee, Tristan Harris, has exposed how the social network “hacks your brain” to keep you hooked.

Harris, a tech engineer, has disclosed that what effort social network put to keep you, your family and friends become dependent on their product. You become addicted to their network since the tactics they use are much very similar to casinos and online bookies.

“Well every time I check my phone, I’m playing the slot machine to see, “What did I get?” This is one way to hijack people’s minds and create a habit, to form a habit. “What you do is you make it so when someone pulls a lever, sometimes they get a reward, an exciting reward. And it turns out that this design technique can be embedded inside of all these products.” Harris told CBS News.

It’s a similar device used by mobile games which get you to fork over cash as you begin to get hooked. Designers and engineers spend years learning the procedures of “gamification” to get players on board. The goal is to duplicate the rush of winning by gaining likes on Facebook and Instagram and retweets on Twitter.

Harris defines a common example of planned habit-forming features is on Snapchat, the most popular instant picture sharing app for teens. They created “streaks”, which shows the number of days in a row that you’ve been chatting to somebody. It seems like nothing to most, but large numbers of children will feel like they don’t want to drop their streak.

Harris said: “It turns out that kids actually when they go on vacation are so stressed about their streak that they actually give their password to, like, five other kids to keep their streaks going on their behalf.”

“And so you could ask why these features are being designed, are they intended to most help people live their life? Or are they being designed because they’re best at buttoning people into using the product?”
