April Fool: The Long History

It’s that time of the year again when people try to make fool others globally. While we love to fool others on this April Fool’s Day, here’s something you would want to know about how this day arose to be.

The product is not new and the history of this day has a long tale. Here you go.

In 1582, France switched from the Julian calendar, which began in late March, to the Gregorian calendar that began in January. So the people who did not know about the new calendar continued to celebrate New Year in the last week of March till April 1. They became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. A paper fish was placed on their backs and they were called “Poisson Avril’ (April Fish), meaning a gullible person.

Around 1700, English pranksters kicked off the annual tradition of April Fool’s Day playing practical jokes on each other. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk, “in which people were sent on phony errands.

In 1985, Sports illustrated tricked its readers running a made-up article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a baseball at 168 miles/hour.

In 1957, BBC reported that Swiss farmers were ‘growing spaghetti’ and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees.

1996, Fast Food chain Taco Bell, claimed that they would buy Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and renamed it as Taco Liberty Bell.

1998, Burger King advertised a ‘Left-Handed Whopper’, which scores of customers actually ordered.

Even today radio, and TV stations, websites and newspapers create elaborate April Fool hoaxes.
