United Nudges Back Rostov and Marked Spot in Quarter-Finals

There is only one team in Manchester left in a continental competition, and manager Jose Mourinho and his side now have a quarter-final to look forward to. The Europa League is looking to be Manchester United's likeliest route back into the Champions League, and they advanced, not in a manner to justify their billing as the tournament favorites, but having negotiated another obstacle in the form of Rostov.

Manchester United made their way to the quarter-final of the Europa League with a stodgy show against extraordinarily defensive Russian opponents Rostov. A 2-1 aggregate win over Russian side with a Mata’s late-middle stun helped United at this stage to move ahead of the tournament.

A second-half goal from Juan Mata was enough to seal the victory, though considering Rostov started in a losing position thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s away goal it was surprising they made so little attempt to chase the game. Not a great match for United but a much-needed victory to grab the last eighth position of the UEL.

Spanish wizard Juan Mata scored the only goal of the night at Old Trafford after United's 1-1 draw in Rostov a week ago – and Jose Mourinho is still dreaming of a Europa League Final in Stockholm in May. Also, he is hopeful to qualify for the Champions League.

It wasn't a classic United display – but apart from a couple of late scares for stand-in keeper Sergio Romero Mourinho's side was worth the victory and all eyes will be on the draw at Uefa HQ. The victory came at a cost for United, though, with off-key Paul Pogba suffering more misery as he limped off just after half time.

Jose Mourinho moved smartly and blamed heavy fixtures and schedules for Pogba’s injury. Pogba has been ruled out for the UEL coming games due to the hamstring injury against FC Rostov.
