FIA to Investigate Spot-Fixing Scandal

The recent spot-fixing scandal emerged during Pakistan Super League is taking major shifts as Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took notice and has sent notices to the alleged cricketers including Sharjeel khan, Nasir Jamshed, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan and Shahzaib Hassan. The cricketers are asked to appear and submit their statements on March 20 and March 21. According to FIA officials, the inquiry was started after a formal request from Pakistan Cricket Board.

Federal Minister Choudhary Nisar has already clarified that spot-fixing will be treated as a crime. He said that it’s a serious issue and such players are a dark spot not only for the PCB but on the honor of the country. Along with PCB’s investigation, FIA is also enquiring the whole matter and if found guilty players will be sent to jail and might face lifetime bans.

Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were named and allegedly found guilty in the beginning of PSL 2. They immediately sent back to Karachi after the reports were confirmed and were later charged in a corruption probe that threatened to undermine the tournament. After Sharjeel, Latif and Irfan, Shahzaib Hassan becomes the fourth player who got suspended in the scandal.

Mohammad Irfan’s was also named on his connection with bookies but continued to play the whole tournament and got suspended three days ago on his confession of meeting a suspicious man linked to an international betting syndicate. According to PCB sources, Nasir Jamshed bridged the cricketers with the bookies and paved the way for spot-fixing.

Several questions have been raised on the role of PCB here as PCB didn’t suspend Irfan in the tournament even after rumors of his involvement in spot-fixing scandal while Sharjeel was sent back just after playing his first match in Islamabad United. Khalid Latif remained unplayable.

Bookmaking is a crime and scandals like spot-fixing is marring the country’s image. PCB and Government of Pakistan need to take more strict actions to wipe out this evil greed from the cricket to encourage deserving players to be a part of this loved game called cricket.
