Biometric Electoral Machines are Likely to be used in Next Elections

The most-anticipated development in the Pakistan’s electoral system is likely to be introduced in the next election as The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has signed an agreement to obtain electronic voting machines (EVMs) and biometric verification machines (BVMs) on a test run in by-elections, as reported by Dawn.

ECP Secretary Babar Yaqub Fateh Muhammad said that once these EVMs and BVMs machines are delivered by vendors in 10 weeks, they will be used in multiple pilot projects in upcoming by-elections to see their results.

Director General (Admin) retired Brig Abbas Ali and Chief Executive Officer of M/s Smartmatic International Holding signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations to acquire 150 EVMs.

The bids for EVMs and BVMs were requested from international dealers last year. Six dealers of EVMs and five dealers of BVMs participated in the bidding process, out of which, three firms selected for supplying EVMs and two for BVMs.

This is the great opportunity for the voters, parliamentarians, the legislators, civil society organizations and the local public to witness the testing service of these newly developed technologies. Around Rs. 35 Billion will be spent on more than 0.3 million polling booths,  as mentioned by ECP Secretary.

The EVMs and BVMs will be employed in the general elections after this test check. A committee containing different Government officials will be formed that will assess the quality, merits, and demerits of this new machinery. Poling agents and staff will also learn the new system, as mentioned by the Secretary ECP.

The system to be introduced is protected from frauds and cheats. This is, indeed, a great and much-anticipated step in the voting system. If it’s really making its way in Pakistan’s electoral system then the voting system will be secured and no bogus votes or rigging will take place in the system.
