Test Cricket Turns 140 Years Old

In an era full of fast-paced things, it’s a day to remember something classic. The vintage stuff that is the ultimate test for the sportsmen, the longest of all, the darling of many – the Test Cricket.

Though in an era of T20 cricket, many may have signalled the death strike for Test matches, the lengthiest format of the popular sport, but for fanatics, it is still the format in which they see classical sportsmanship. And even though several of us may have seen myriad Test matches, cheering for our home teams, not many would have spared a thought to wonder when the first competition of this standard kind was played.

Today, 140 years ago, the first official Test match was played between Australia and England which started on 15th March 1887 and finished on 19th March. The first test match was the start of the competition between England and the newly created Australian team, a rivalry that exists to this day.

This historic game was played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The established England Cricket Team defeated by 40-runs from the newly formed Australian Cricket Team. The test lasted over a period of five days with a rest day on the fourth day. England squared the two-match series by pulling off an inspirational comeback and winning next match by four wickets.

Least did people know back then that cricket will turn out to be a worldwide phenomenon with England and Australia taking the centre stage through their rivalry. A Test was played between these two-sided from 12th to 17th March 1977 to mark 100 years of Test cricket where the Aussies once again defeated England by 45 runs.

This came on the eve of the third test match between Australia and India which is scheduled to begin on 16th March, Google paid a special homage to the Test Cricket. The doodle represents a fictional comic imagery in which players are focusing on the ball in the air. Strangely, the specific Google doodle is restricted to visible only in India and Australia, excluding even England, which was one of the teams to actually play that first match back in 1877.
