Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are added to the home screen, allowing users to experience the grasp of a Google Play Store app without needing to go through a download or update process. Earlier, in 2015, Google had enabled its users to add home screen shortcut button of their favorite sites that let swiftly steer you to the website without scrolling the bookmarks.

Progressive Web Apps are users’ experiences that merge the finest of web and apps. These apps are directly there on the home screen without the need of installation. These apps load immediately even in unstable network conditions. The response is quick with smooth animations and videos. It feels like having app-styled interaction and navigation. Served via HTTPS, they provide a safe, appealing and faster experience.

The latest update was around since 2015 but now only accessible in chrome’s beta version of android. The use is simple when you open a Progressive Web App, a home screen button will save your site like before but now it won’t be just a fancy link. The site you have saved will appear in the apps drawer like every other app that has downloaded from play store with same setting and function, as read by the blog:

“Progressive Web Apps will now appear in the app drawer section of the launcher and in Android Settings and will be able to receive incoming intents from other apps. Long presses on their notifications will also reveal the normal Android notification management controls rather than the notification management controls for Chrome.

This new Add to Home screen feature is one more step in our journey to empower developers to build the best possible experience for their users, and we are committed to ensuring the same mechanisms for installing Progressive Web Apps are available to all browsers on Android.”
