Symptoms of Depression increases with job authority in women, decreases in men

One could wonder how job authority has a significant impact on the stress level and depression of a working individual. Well, a recent study finds that the increasing job authority increases the symptoms of depression in women and is inversely proportional in men.

Tetyana Pudrovska , lead author of the study “In contrast, men with job authority have fewer symptoms of depression than men without such power” and an assistant professor in the department of Sociology at the University of Texas said that Women with Job authority like of hiring, firing and having influence on pay have more depression symptoms than the women that  do not have this power.

The study titled as “Gender, Job authority, and depression” considers the response of 1300 middle aged men and 1500 middle aged women. The study has appeared in the December issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. The study also revealed some important facts about the reason of this phenomenon in women. The major factors suggested in the report are negative social interaction, social isolation, interpersonal tension and prejudice, resistance from subordinates, colleagues and superiors also led to this increase in tension.

In 1993 and 2004, about 1302 men and 1500 women, all white, were interviewed as a part of the research study. The research was made to understand the change in nature of a person as they reach the age of 65. There were no diagnoses given for their source of depression rather the study revolved around the effects that changed a person’s state of mind. Every symptom, as to how they were feeling whether sad or depressed was studied profusely to identify the source. The research clearly indicated the reason for such stress related problems to the unappreciated decision of hiring and firing people. Most women took this responsibility personally which influenced their mental behavior considerably. Men, however, were not so easily effected but still felt the burn.
