First Pakistani Polio Case in 2016

Polio or poliomyelitis is one of the most harmful endemic viral infections so far discovered. Unfortunately, Pakistan is one of the two remaining countries in the world with this deadly infection. There have been immense social and political campaigns to make polio end in Pakistan but things have not proven to be entirely beneficial so far. However, there has been a lot of change due to all these efforts. More tragically, just when people were hoping that 2015 would be the last year for any polio virus existence in Pakistan, first polio case of 2016 got discovered.

A 34-month-old boy in Gadap Town, Karachi has been diagnosed positive for polio. It is one of the first polio cases reported for this year so far. However, medical practitioners believe that there are chances of more polio positive cases in the country, yet to be diagnosed.

On inquiry, it is being discovered that the 34-month old Aijaz Khan did not underwent routine immunizations but he was only catered in around seven doses of oral polio vaccine drops during special drives. Doctors believe that malnourishment, frequent infections and humid climate in most parts of Pakistan weaken the immune system of young children, which make them prone towards this polio virus.

Nevertheless, moral and social perceptions of keeping children devoid of immunizations are also one of the biggest reasons of polio spread in the country. These perceptions can only be changed if people get rid of poverty and acquire education in Pakistan.
