Pakistan plans to hold another 4G band auction in March

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan has initiated the significant progression and measures to auctioning the remaining 4G spectrum among the telecom companies of Pakistan. The auctioning program is set to conduct in the recent year in March 2017 as reported by ProPakistani.

According to ProPakistani, the relevant spokesperson had told that in order to perform the auction efficiently within the particular period, the process has already been started. An Auction Supervisory Committee will need to be formed to manage the sale process. Now, the final approval has to be done by the Prime Minister as a file has already been sent to the PM office.

The first ever 4G auction, done by Pakistan was held online in which telecom operators sent proposals using the safe portal provided by PTA. After achieving the bid, an event was also arranged by PTA in Marriott Hotel, Islamabad to cover the whole auction process.

In 2014, Zong and Mobilink each won the 10 MHz 3G spectrums in 2100 MHz band, Telenor and Ufone managed to win the 5 MHz 3G spectrums in 2100 MHz band each. Zong was also able to win the 10 MHz 4G spectrum in 1800 MHz band. Telenor and Warid were later able to get the 4G spectrums. After the recent mergence of Mobilink and Warid, Mobilink also got the 4G band. Now, Ufone remains the only company which doesn’t have the 4G spectrum.

The point is notably raised that the Pakistan experienced a huge incursion of people shifting to latest cutting edge technologies following the 3G/4G auction two years back. The shifting, however, had sluggish down to a point when it hit the second lowest of past 10 months.

In Pakistan, the consumers of 3G and 4G have reached 37.57 million by end-December 2016 as compared to 36.41 million by November. PTA statistics shows that the number of 3G/4G users increased in the country from 29 million in 2015-2016 to over 37 million by end of December i.e. 8 million had increased in the previous month. The forthcoming spectrum will be based on the number of subscribers and data usage then it would decide the market desire for further spectrum.
