Shahid Afridi joins T20 Champions Kowloon Cantons

Shahid Afridi might not have managed to pull off the farewell match from Pakistan Cricket Board but he is now a part of cricket franchise Kowloon Cantons for Hong Kong T20 Blitz. Kowloon Cantons was the joint winner of 2016’s inaugural T20 and this year, it’s scheduled to organize in March. By signing the agreement with Kowloon Cantons, Pakistan’s hitting star became the first major international player to be revealed for the event.

Kowloon Cantons already set the benchmark in inaugural session by signing World Cup winning captain of Australia, Michael Clarke as a marquee player. Cantons, the popular franchise, hold the unique record of being launched by nine cricket-loving Hong Kong women and ex-captain Rahul Sharma. It was history that made by Kowloon Cantons and now they seem proud to have the former captain of their squad.

The 36-year-old flamboyant limited-overs batsman of all time Afridi is expected to play matches between 8th to 12th March 2017.  Afridi’s name was announced by the franchise management on Monday. According to the spokesperson of Cantons, “We are thrilled to have such a fantastic player come into our Kowloon Cantons’ family. We are sure that Shahid Afridi’s presence will once again bring this tournament into the global limelight.”

Afridi has represented Pakistan in 398 one-day matches, scoring six centuries and 39 fifties, with 395 wickets. In tests, Afridi has played 27 matches for Pakistan, scoring five centuries and eight fifties, with 48 wickets. If ever a player was made for T20 cricket, it is all-rounder Afridi, who still holds the record for most international wickets in the 20-over game at 97. And he also has four fifties in T20 internationals.

Afridi retained the record for the fastest ODI century off 37 deliveries against Sri Lanka for almost 20 years until it was broken by AB De Villiers in 2015. Pakistan’s star all-rounder was the performer of the tournament for the inaugural season of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and led Pakistan to the title in 2009 with match-winning performances in the semi-final and final.

“I am looking forward to playing for the Kowloon Cantons in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz. I’ve heard good things about the tournament and look forward to playing in Hong Kong again, a place where I always enjoy the atmosphere, people, and hospitality,” said Afridi, who has played in the Hong Kong Sixes.
