Robert Marchand proves, Age is just a number

Age is just a number and it really doesn’t matter when you have an immense passion for cycling at the age 105. Robert Marchand, an old Frenchman was told at the five by his coach that he should give up his dream of cycling because achieving something on cycle seems impossible for Robert. But, the coach didn’t know that Robert will prove him wrong twice. Robert Marchand has set a world record in the 105-plus age —arranged particularly for the untiring veteran — by cycling 22.547 kilometers in one hour.

A 105-year-old, in a skin-tight yellow and violet jersey after setting the world record, actually beating his own previous, challenged everyone, said, “I’m waiting for rival”.  Though Robert Marchand was warned by doctors that his current health is not as good and it will create severe bangs if he again attempts the ride.

Considering his age and passion, fans were really excited throughout his journey and cheerfully chanted “Robert, Robert”, when he was on track during the final moments. As soon as, he accomplished his 92 laps, the audience gave him a standing ovation and circled around him with pleasure. The event was largely covered by TV and camera persons of French media.

"I did not see the sign warning me I had 10 minutes left, Otherwise I would have gone faster, I would have posted a better time. I'm not tired. I thought my legs would hurt, but they don't. My arms hurt, you have to hurt somewhere." Marchand expressed after the effort. He could have faster but he stopped eating meat in the past years that caused him a slow ride.

At the same venue, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome outside Paris, he also managed to ride 26.927 kilometers (nearly 17 miles) Three years ago. That was exceptionally a record for someone aged over 100.

Before the attempting the ride, Marchand said that exceeding that distance within an hour will be hard but he's indomitable to give it a go, even if the modest centenarian admitted that he’s not in a good shape as he was a couple of years back."If I were, I'd be a phenomenon, and I'm not." He added.

The diminutive Marchand — he is 5-foot tall and weighs 52 kilograms — rode from Bordeaux to Paris, and Paris to Roubaix several times. He also cycled to Moscow from Paris in 1992 and set the record for someone over the age of 100 riding 100 kilometers.
