Sorry Social Media you do not represent us, Says Human

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram are great for socializing and sharing everyday happenings with your friends and family but it doesn’t represent the real world behavior as the latest report suggests.

Scientists, researchers, and various professors have been using Big data from social media websites for analyzing and making decisions. Facebook’s newsfeed algorithm is not as transparent as it seems. Research has proved that when negative stuff and news appear on someone’s newsfeed, it increases the negative element in that person and vice versa. According to the study, people aren’t happy with the changes in their newsfeed as it shows that Facebook manipulates the data.

The Government, organizations, and companies monitor the ‘big social data’ to check the ‘pulse’ of the public and they keep an eye on the postings placed on these social websites. For the matter of fact, Computer engineers have a term that is very popular among them is “GIGO”. (GIGO = Garbage In Garbage Out).

Computer scientists, at McGill University in Montreal and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, said in a paper published yesterday that all those researchers and scientists who use social data for analyzing human behavior should stop doing it immediately as the data is not accurate and can result in wrong results and calculations.

According to this paper:

There are different social media websites for the users of different ages. For example females belonging in the age between 25 to 34 years use Pinterest whereas females of age 19-29 are using Instagram. Another key thing to consider is that researchers can ONLY utilize “public” data of users therefore the population of this data cannot be considered accurate as public data shows the different story altogether. There are large number of Spammers and bots on these websites which act exactly the same way as human therefore it is almost impossible to distinguish between the users who are human and bots.

Despite all these “obvious” issues, researchers are optimistic about the data extracted through these social websites and believe that if all the (above mentioned) flaws are minimized and removed then the social websites can become the perfect source for big data.
