Hat-trick of Shaukat Khanum Hospital

Someone said it very aptly that if Taj Mahal was the greatest tribute to a wife then the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital is the greatest tribute to a mother. There could be no greater love for a mother than building a cancer hospital in her name by her son, unlike Taj Mahal. It’s a wonder of philanthropy, and spirit. Karachi being the largest metropolis needed this hospital. Many deprived oncology patients in and around Karachi will benefit. People are hoping for an early completion and operation.

After the successful landmark of SKMH Islamabad (1994) and SKMH Peshawar (2015), Imran khan set the groundbreaking event of Shaukat Khanum, Karachi on yesterday, 29th of December 2016. The foundation stone laid by the 9-year-old Waleed from Jamshoro. The hospital will be operational fully in 2019. This is the 3rd project of Imran khan, who is also chairman board of governors Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, he said around 75% patients were dealt with at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital at no cost. He speculated that around 90% patients in Pakistan couldn't get the treatment of cancer disease since it is so expensive. He said that Rs36 billion has been used up for the healing of cancer patients since 1994 regardless of rich and poor. Khan uncovered that 25 percent of Pakistani kids are subjected to starvation and inequality to the country is a reason for all tragedies.

Hospitals and educational institutes are the hallmarks of progress & prosperity. If we strictly focus on Imran Khan’s personality then his social activities are not concealed from anyone. Namal University, Mianwali (2008) is an example of this besides SKMH. We may have different political affiliations and support but the credit should be given where it is owed. After Abdul Sattar Edhi, Imran Khan’s philanthropy is above board.

As indicated by the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust administration, the whole cost 0 from setting out the foundation to working – will cost around 4.5 billion rupees. 20-acres soil has been allotted at DHA City, by the DHA administration for its construction.

The development of the hospital is separated into different stages, and the first stage will take around 2 and half years to finish. The advanced facility will be completely operational on 29th, December 2019, - precisely three years from now. Interestingly, first SKMH also became functional on 29th December 1994.

This is what Imran Khan is good at and this is what he should stick to. It’s undoubtedly a great step for the people of Karachi and Sindh. Through this step, Karachi will surely rise above the political conflicts and turn out to be the home of Pakistan’s biggest cancer treatment hospital. They won’t have to travel long for the cancer cure. Despite the political differences, everyone should appreciate and be the part of the endeavor. Donating the money is the least we could do. Please donate generously!
