Cricket beyond the boundaries

Just when the commentator’s voice strikes with your ear that it’s a boundary, you know it’s a boundary but when you hear that Shahid Afridi’s diehard fan arrested in India for wearing Afridi’s jersey, you have to believe that cricket is beyond the boundaries and borders.

Ripon Chowdhury, a 21-year-old Indian boy, who is a cricket fanatic and Afridi’s enthusiastic fan, arrested by Indian police for wearing Pakistan cricket team’s jersey, bearing the name of ‘Afridi 10’ while watching a domestic cricket match. But again secular and nationals happened to Ripon’s fate and this act burnt one of the right-wing Hindu outfits. A complaint was filed against Ripon by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)’s wing and police took him into custody from Hailakandi.  Right away, he was released later. Rupon said his batting style is much similar with Afridi and people in his village of Asaam, often call him Boom Boom for his aggressive style.  He expressed his wish to meet Afridi at least once in his lifetime and he is hoping that he will meet his star one day.

Pakistan star all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi, condemned the bigoted act and called ‘shameful’ the detention of his fan. As per the reports of Dawn news, Afridi said such actions won’t discourage the cricket madness in this region of the world and incidents like these don’t go well with cultured countries. Afridi viewed that sports shouldn’t be interfered by politics and such actions cricket go against the spirit of sportsmanship. Afridi thanked his Indian fan for admiring him and said he would love to meet Ripon anytime. He also wants to appeal the case to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a look at this matter.

The swashbuckling Pakistan batsman is one of the most respected Pakistani cricketers in India and holds a huge fan base in India. He was greatly famous among Indian fans during the IPL when Pakistani cricketers were a part of the league. The 36-year-old all-rounder has appeared in 398 ODIs and 98 T20 internationals furthermore captained Pakistan in each of the three formats. He stepped down as skipper of the Pakistan team after an awful display in the World T20 in India last April.

Cricket, have been used as a diplomatic way to promote relations between countries in the South Asian region, specifically in the context of Indo-Pak relations. In every term, politicians across the borders see cricket diplomacy as a tool to strengthen affairs in the time of tensions. But India always seems resisted when it comes to BJP’s government. All the future series of India-Pakistan have now put into danger after Urri attack and India terminated the friendly relations immediately. But this should be stopped from both sides of the borders. Either artists or cricketers, politics should be kept aside. Earlier in January 2016, a Pakistani fan was detained for waving the Indian flag after his star Virat Kohli struck a match-winning blow against Australia.
