Bicycles as a Token for Women Empowerment

USAID donated 200 bicycles to the Women’s Cycling Club of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF). This donation has been made to empower women in Pakistan, specifically in the agriculture sector. This initiative has been taken under the USAID’s Gender Equity Program. The authorities highlighted the need of women empowerment in Pakistan for good.

Transportation is one of the significant parts of all the challenges faced by women while acquiring education or pursuing a career. Hence, it is very important for women to have access to safe and affordable transportation. With bicycles, mobility of women students can be increased on the campus. Nonetheless, the confidence, they will gain through this experience will help them in their later life as well.

According to the UAF Vice Chancellor, women have been riding bicycles on the campus during 1970s as well but later the trend declined due to a lot of negative social and political sources. Welcoming the gift of bicycles from USAID, University also aims to make efforts for women empowerment. Providing women on campus with the state of the art facilities is one of the significant parts of women empowerment efforts.

The Punjab government has also funded a hostel for 1000 girls for UAF while the University has set up a hostel for working women, a day care center and five other hostels at the Post graduate Agriculture Research Station. Women too have to play the role individually for the socio-economic development of the country.
