Food Fortification Program

A Food Fortification Program has been launched in Islamabad to reduce iron and vitamin A deficiency in women and children by increasing the micronutrient content of flour and edible oils. The initiative has been taken to cater the malnutrition cause in Pakistan. United Kingdom’s department for International Development working with Mott MacDonald and Micronutrient Initiative launched this program for the improvisation of nutrition for Pakistani people, specifically women of childbearing age and children.

Food Fortification Program is going to work closely with the Government of Pakistan and different communities that include Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination, the National and provincial Fortification Alliances, the Pakistan Flour Mills Association, Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association and the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority.

Pakistan is ranked third when it comes to highest number of children under the age of five, suffering from malnutrition. 44% of these children suffer from stunted growth, 62% are anemic and 54% have vitamin A deficiencies. In addition, one out of every fifth child in Pakistan has low birth weight. 51% of pregnant women in Pakistan have anemia, 37% have iron deficiency and 46% have vitamin A deficiency.

Through Food Fortification Program, technical assistance shall be provided to the governments at federal, provincial and district levels on technical standards, legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as, laboratory testing infrastructure. Millers would also get financial costs of micro-feeder equipment to provide subsidies to mills for the cost of premix as an incentive to produce high-quality fortified flour.
