50th International Literacy Day

The year 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day. This year, this day is being celebrated with the theme of “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”. It is going to honor the past five decades of national and international engagement, efforts and progress made to increase literacy rate around the globe. It will also address the current challenges and their unique solutions to boost literacy.

UNESCO officially proclaimed the 8th of September as International Literacy Day to promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies eight years ago. Coincidently, this 50th International Literacy Day concedes with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Due to this coincidence, the vision of literacy and lifelong learning opportunities particularly in youth and adults is promoted. There should be standard for all youth and adults irrespective of gender, to achieve literacy and numeracy by 2030.

Globally, literacy is aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for every human being on earth. During 50 years, the world has achieved a lot in terms of literacy but there is a lot that still needs to get done. From 1990 till 2015, the number of young adults without literacy skills has decreased by 25%, despite the substantial increase in world population. Globally, people have also made efforts to eradicate gender gaps when it comes to literacy. Nonetheless, there is a lot that needs to be done in Pakistan even today.

Afreen is a young writer and visionary towards life predominantly. I believe that writing is similar to life; it inspires surprises and creates. Being a Literature Masters, I am passionate about viewing the world with literary spectacle. Solely in love with this beautiful part of Universe called Pakistan, I am creating words and ideas for CharchaGuru.
