Maalik Unbanned

The movie Maalik seems to be like another typical Pakistani case, which displays the law loopholes and the government’s inability to handle anything appropriately. After several months’ ban, the movie is set to return to Pakistani theatres after getting a green signal from the Sindh High Court. The two bench member hearing took place with the Chief justice on the Director Ashir Azeem’s plea, which challenged the ban, quashing the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) notification issued on 27th April.

According to the court, the government authorities violated the principle audi alteram partem but their order is faced in clear derogation of the Section 9(2) of Motion Pictures Ordinance 1979 and therefore, it cannot be sustained. In view of all this, this petition has been allowed and the notification of the federal government has been quashed.

Azeem still believes in his project and he thinks that there is nothing controversial about the movie. It seemed like the government want to warn all the directors of Pakistan not to make movies depicting reality. Azeem consulted high court to file against both provincial and federal watchdogs. The decision given by High Court is actually a slap on the face of the federal government, which put the ban.

The federal government of Pakistan declared the film as uncertified in the entire country, which made the cinemas reluctant to play it. Cinemas too received warnings for playing it. The government seems more like dictatorship when it comes to film and art.
