Organic Food: A Growing Industry in Pakistan

University of Management and Technology (UMT) and Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST) emphasized on the significance of organic food, its impacts on health and need for research, innovation and entrepreneurship at the seminar on “Organic Food-Opportunities for Innovation and Entrepreneurship”. Minister of Science and Technology attended the event as a Chief Guest while high dignitaries from the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences were also present to grace the event.

Vice chancellors of different Universities, researchers, scientists and members of civil societies took part in the seminar. Speakers affirmed that Pakistan has a great future in organic food and it can readily become a leading exporter to USA and EU. Government says that they have contributed towards the betterment of food sector so far. Pakistan has an export potential of around $1 billion. In order to cash this worth, new businesses opportunities to export organic food to America and European Union shall be created.

A lot of successful countries in the world have strengthened their food sector by the export and import of organic food. Finding organic food without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other artificial substances is a very difficult task. However, Pakistani farmers are capable of producing such food. If Pakistani farmers are provided little guidance and support on the right direction, along with the right resources, they can give very fruitful results with the organic food industry of the country. Government has to make efforts for this.
