Tapi Project

The two emerging superpowers in the world, which are China and Japan, are also developing their gas fields by laying a pipeline in Turkmenistan, which will bring gas for Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. This will readily cater the energy needs of our country.

A consortium of Japanese companies had been awarded a contract for the development of the gas field in Turkmenistan in return for a service fee. In addition, a Chinese company has also received a contract for laying the pipeline over 300 kilometers in the territory of Turkmenistan. Russian and European firms from several countries were competing with China to win this contract but eventually, Chinese company won.

Tapi Company under the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (Tapi) gas pipeline project gave pipeline contracts in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistan, Afghanistan and India will pay the tolling fee while Tapi will run and maintain the pipeline. Tapi is currently trying to arrange the finances and have informed Pakistani government to hold road shows around the world to raise the funds for the development of transnational pipeline.

Major part of the financing scheme shall be contributed by the Turkmenistan government as they have 85% shareholding in the Tapi Company. On the other hand, Japanese companies are also providing investment funds as they have already contributed $15 billion. Pakistan, Afghanistan and India have currently agreed on $10 billion. Hence, it is anticipated that Tapi project will bring more peace, business and stability in all the three regions, which are strategic in their won definition.
