The Bagasse-Based Power Plant by Mehran Sugar Mills

Mehran Sugar Mills has announced to set-up a bagasse-based power plant of 26.5 megawatts in Sindh. This project is planned for the increasing demand of electricity and the government’s policies to convince the company for diversification and being profitable.

The government of Pakistan has a favorable policy for the promotion of bagasse-based power projects due to the increased demand of electricity. Thus, Mehran Sugar Mills has taken the decision of setting up a 26.5MW bagasse-based power project. This decision was formally conveyed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange as well.

The Mehran Sugar Mills would be spending equity of up to 750 million PKR in this power project, which is going to be operational by December, 2018. Through this way, the Mehran Sugar Mills would also be following their diversification plan.

Production of sugar has reached the saturation point when there is no agricultural land available for the cultivation of sugarcane. The land near the mill is already in use so far. Hence, there is no available rain-fed land available, which could be converted into agricultural field with sugarcane cultivation. The Mehran Sugar Mills is not able to expand their sugar production business due to this saturation. This expansion decision would impact their growth in the next 5-10 years.

Residue of sugarcane, which is called bagasse, shall be used as a fuel for power production. With ready available bagasse, fuel cost shall be saved. 5.88 Kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the approved tariff from NEPRA.
