German Assistance for Melting Pakistani Glaciers

A grant of six million euros to Pakistan have been given to by the German government through its KfW for monitoring over 5,000 melting glaciers in northern parts of the country that contribute to about 80% of the river flow in Pakistan. The Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) shall be receiving this fund for the Project Glacial Monitoring for Energy and Water Security in Pakistan for telemetric equipment in the lower stretches if the areas with glaciers.

The agreement for this fund was signed recently, in the presence of the Secretary of German Embassy. Both the states presented warm gestures on the long-terms development of the partnership with KfW. Pakistan is the second best custodian of the largest number of glaciers outside arctic. Pakistan surely qualifies for the global leadership in addressing a critical aspect of climate change through this project.

The solar equipment used in this project will transmit glacial melt data for processing in the city of Lahore. This data will later be used in the regulation of hydropower generation, dam protection, and other various reservoir management operations. On the other hand, national entities, such as The Federal Flood Commission, the Flood Forecasting Division of the Pakistan Meteorological Department and the Indus River Systems Authority will readily benefit from this information.

There would be two modern and advanced buildings constructed in Skardu and Lahore for the entire housing staff and the sophisticated equipment. Recurring floods in Pakistan shall also be reduced.
