A Voice for Dance in Pakistan

Recently, Pakistani dancers took a stand to clear the image of the entire dance in the society by making it clear that dance is not promiscuous but rather a very beautiful form of art, which needs recognition, appreciation and academies.

In a country like Pakistan, it is difficult for people to understand “Dance” as an art form. We live in a society where all dance forms are perceived as prostitution and ill practices, which is so demeaning for the art itself and all its lovers.

One of the biggest reasons, we do not have proper art academies is the religiously manipulated idea of prohibiting all dance forms as unethical practices, done by wrong doers. Dance is an art and not just a way to entertain men sexually by females.

Dance is a part of Pakistani culture. It is often displayed in marriages, films and festivals. Though Bollywood item songs have clearly disrupted dance image in the society, genuine dance forms still have femininity and culture in them. Nevertheless, people are still not able to differentiate art from religion.

There are thousands of young Pakistani boys and girls, who want to learn and practice art, not just for a living but to fulfill their passion. There are also students, which have done their thesis on this topic to enrich the haul of dance theory in Pakistan. In terms of law, dance was banned in 1981 as a part of Islamisation driven by military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.
