How to Waste Medical Waste?

Medical waste is harmful to our environment and human beings. Though it is the just waste but it can cause some serious health problems if it is not disposed of in the right manner. Medical waste can cause potentially infectious diseases through the agents in them. This medical waste contains used needles, syringes, body parts, blood, chemicals, diagnostic samples, soiled dressings, radioactive materials, medical devices etc.

If medical waste is not treated properly, health care workers, patients, waste handlers and even community get exposed to infections, injuries, and toxic effects. Nonetheless, this waste is highly responsible for polluting the environment, in which we live! All these risk factors portray the need to dispose of medical waste material properly to make sure than human beings, other living beings and environment is safe.

There are numerous hospitals and medical centers in Pakistan, which discard heavy medical waste every day. However, there are no government policies for dumping this medical waste. Eventually, harmful medical waste is also dumped like any other garbage from homes in our cities. It is high time government should realize that health sector needs policies for dumping medical waste as well because more people can be at health risk due to this waste.

The government should come up with the program of introducing facilities for wasting medical waste. These facilities are also mentioned in UNO’s health charter. Medical institutions and organizations should play their role in the formation of such facilities for the improvement of health care system in Pakistan.
