APNS Elections

All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) recently had elections for their office bearers, where Sarmad Ali got appointed as the President, Rameeza Majid Nizami as the Senior Vice President, Mumtaz A. Tahir as the Vice President, Umer Mujib Shami as the Secretary General, S.M Munir Jilani as Joint Secretary and Syed Ali Hasan Naqvi as the Finance Secretary for the year 2016-1017.

These elections were chaired under President Hameed Haroon, who approved all the account reports and signed on the decisions. All the newly designated people are congratulated by the authorities in the council. The issue of government-relations was also discussed in this council along with the state of newspaper industry and obstacles faced by the member publications. All these issues are integral for the newspaper business in Pakistan.

One of the biggest current government-press relations issues is federal and provincial governments’ denial for majority of ads from genuine publications. In addition, big part of advertising budget has been already allocated to electronic media. As a fair deal, government must allocate a fixed share for the advertising budgets of print media. There should be more transparency in the release of government ads.

Unfortunately, like all the other offices of Pakistan, print media is also corroded with corruption. Media is responsible for informing people rightly, if this business industry would have political pressures from government then unfortunately, people would not have any reliable source of information to trust. Role of media should be improved by making them more independent and liberal.
