Cheers for Pakistani Women!

The year 2016 is proving to be a merry time for the women of Pakistan as recently, Women’s Protection Law is passed in the Punjab Assembly. In the light of this law, physical violence, abusive language, stalking, cyber crimes, etc. against women are declared crimes. This law is expected to bring change in the Pakistani society and give more respect to this gender.

Almost every other crime in Pakistan is associated with women. There are thousands of reported and unreported cases of rapes, molestation, abuse, honor killings and internet crimes every day. However, law for women is even weaker than the law in general. Through the passing of this bill, it is expected that criminals involved in all such crimes are given deserving punishments.

Before this bill, bureaucratic hurdles always prevent women victims from getting justice from criminal men. One such example is of Mukhtar Mai. Fortunately now, it is expected that more women will stand up to fight for their rights.

As soon as the bill was passed, an entire lobby of opposition was ready with their criticism that this bill would liberate women, which will lead to more divorces, familial disputes and formation of a secular Pakistan. It is shocking that how these senseless people can even declare giving rights to women as “un-Islamic”!

Overall, the passing of this bill is a very good sign for the empowerment and liberation of women in Pakistan. It is the high time people should realize that women are just another sex, not another species!
